She Kills Monsters

By Qui Nguyen

SHE KILLS MONSTERS -  THE PLAY:
An adventurous quest awaits! She Kills Monsters tells the story of Agnes Evans as she packs up her childhood home after the death of her younger sister, Tilly, and her parents. When she finds Tilly’s Dungeons & Dragons notebook, Agnes is transported into a journey of discovery and a world of fantasy and adventure. Learning more about her younger sister, Agnes meets elves, bugbears, and other fantastical beings while connecting with people Tilly loved. This action-packed dramatic comedy is full of kick-butt fairies, nasty succubus, energetic 1990s pop culture, and, most importantly, living life to the fullest. Acclaimed playwright Qui Nguyen’s She Kills Monsters celebrates the inner geek and warrior in us all.

Filled with humor and immense heart, Sweat  tells the journey of a group of friends who share drinks, laughs, and secrets at their favorite local bar after work on the factory floor. The close-knit group’s trust is tested during impending layoffs and strikes as they fight to stay afloat and reach for the American dream. This powerful and poignant story provides an emphatic look at working-class Americans and the intricacy of identity, race, and humanity. Produced on Broadway, Lynn Nottage’s contemporary play Sweat won the Pulitzer Prize for Drama in 2017.

As the director, I wanted to provide more acting opportunities for students, so I double cast as many roles as I could. I'm very proud of my cast, stage management team, crew, and designers.

Electra

ELECTRA - THE PRODUCTION:
I had a rewarding experience directing River Stage's   Electra    at Cosumnes River College! My director's vision took this  ancient Greek play and added a futuristic twist. Electra    mixed "Tron" elements, Greek drama, and female empowerment.

Directed by Janey Pintar

THE PLAY:
Shakespeare’s Ophelia in Hamlet continues to intrigue audiences.  Who is Ophelia today? Are there real-life versions of her in our world? What would Shakespeare’s Ophelia do if she was given another chance at life? THE OPHELIAS: BADASS VOICES, a new play with movement, explores fictional and non-fictional Ophelias who succeed in opposing life’s challenges. THE OPHELIAS: BADASS VOICES combines classical and contemporary theatre practices and was inspired by Shakespeare’s Ophelia in HAMLET, a reborn Ophelia who, with another chance at life, empowers others like her, and the obstacles and triumphs of artist Rita Moreno and activist Malala Yousafzai. This empowering story uplifts the courageous, determined, intelligent, and badass voices in our world.

THE PRODUCTION:
My MFA thesis production was a smashing success! The production celebrated the diverse voices in the UC Davis community. The production was directed, created, projection, costume, co-prop, and co-sound designed by MFA graduate student and UC Davis alumna Janey Pintar. The cast included nine UC Davis undergraduate students: Laurel Capps, Valeria Ceja, TaNia Echols, Liliana Gonzalez, Shivani Iyer, Zouapa Lor, Ryley Sakai, Tiffany Segovia, and Allan Qichen Tan. The production’s stage manager was UC Davis undergraduate LeeAnne Boot. The lighting and co-sound designs were by Patrick Thrasher. The co-prop design was by Georganne Pintar.

The Importance of Being Earnest at William Jessup University
The Importance of Being Earnest was the first comedy of manners produced by William Jessup University's  Theatre Arts Department.  My goal  was for the students to learn the style of a comedy of manners,  properly use a dialect, and execute strong,  clear, and detailed acting objectives and tactics.  There  wasn't an acting styles  or  dialect and accent course, so I taught these to the student actors in a 5-week rehearsal process of this 3-act play.

The Importance of Being Earnest sold out every performance during its 2-week performance run.  It was the first theatre production at William Jessup University to completely sell out.  I produced this show with a $0.00 budget.  In addition to directing, I also was the co-scenic designer of the production and pulled or bought costumes for the production.

Superheroes  at  Sol Aureus College Preparatory

Picture
This directing project is near and dear to my heart. I directed the first theatrical production and taught the first acting and theatre classes at Sol Aureus College Preparatory .  Working with underserved and underrepresented ethnically diverse students,  85% of the students were receiving financial assistance of some kind. Every student I worked with  was new to the  theatre arts.  I'm proud that my students learned a lot in a positive, encouraging environment and had a successful superpowered production.

I opened the production with a movement/dance number that I choreographed in the style of superheroes getting ready to begin their day fighting for justice. This story embraces the  superheroes in our everyday lives as well as the heroes in the Marvel and DC universes .

An inspiration for my director's vision for this production  included the following quote from the beloved Stan Lee from Marvel: "That person who helps others simply because it should or must be done, and because it is the right thing to do, is indeed without a doubt, a real superhero."

BEYOND PERSUASION at City Theatre

Picture
City Theatre's Beyond Persuasion was directed by Lori Ann Delappe-Grondin and assistant directed by me. Additionally, I worked on the marketing for the production. Beyond Persuasion is an adapation of Jane Austen's novel following the story of beloved Anne Elliot. This romantic story asks, "Is a second chance at love possible?"

The production centers on female characters including a female lead.

Graduation and SF Giants at CLARA's  Summer Camp

I worked as a theatre arts director and  teaching artist in CLARA's performing arts summer camp for middle school students working in collaboration with Capital Stage, a professional theatre company in Sacramento. During  the camp, I  worked with  2 groups  of students teaching  acting classes and rehearsing for a culminating performance.  I wrote and directed  2  short 1-act plays, Graduation and SF Giants, that were used for the culminating performance produced for a public audience.

Borrowing Pam at Studio 301

Borrowing Pam is a comedy that I directed that showcases how far someone will go to save another person's life.  This  dark comedy has a  strong moral tone  highlighting the  importance of lifting each other up and the positive aspects of human connection.

"The Japanese director Tadashi Suzuki once stated, 'International cultural exchange is impossible - therefore we must try.' I agree with all my heart. The impossibility of seeing beyond one's own cultural context is a political act in the world and has the potential to break down the rigid assumptions surrounding us."
